Alessandra, or Ally, is a passionate education student, softball player and coach, and a confident pageant competitor. But her journey to self-confidence has been anything but easy.
In primary and early high school, she faced intense bullying that deeply affected her self-esteem. A toxic friendship in Year 9 added to this, with constant negative comments about her appearance leading to a decline in her mental health. She developed anxiety around exams, struggled with eating, and felt overwhelmed by the pressure.
Her turning point came when close friends noticed her struggles and encouraged her to speak to her school’s deputy principal. Though initially resistant and scared, this step led to her telling her parents and beginning a long journey of therapy, medical appointments, and personal healing.
She was later diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and an eating disorder. Even after high school, transitioning to university life reignited some struggles. She found support again in a new psychologist, who later diagnosed her with major depressive disorder. But this time, Ally was ready to take control.
She made a commitment to herself—to genuinely take care of her mind and body. She started going to the gym, reconnected with friends, and committed to therapy. Though the journey has had setbacks, she now stands stronger, more self-aware, and proud of how far she has come.
Today, Ally uses her voice to remind others that it’s okay to not be okay, and that asking for help is a sign of strength. Walking tall—literally and figuratively—on pageant stages in her heels, she’s a living example of resilience and growth.
